Mr. Bitrus Gyang Tok leads the activities of the Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Unit at Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) as Programme Manager. He designs, coordinates and implements laboratory quality assurance and improvement programs for laboratories supported by the Institute across the country.
He provides technical support to IHVN supported facilities on External Quality Assurance Proficiency Testing (EQA/PT) programs and implementation of laboratory international standards towards national and international accreditation. He also develops training curricula and facilitates quality management systems trainings.
Mr. Tok’s duties involve fostering collaboration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), the Medical Laboratory Services Division (MLSD) at the Federal Ministry of Health, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program, National AIDS and STDs Control Program and the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). He leads his team to provide technical assistance on proficiency testing programs, international accreditation, development of guidelines on quality management systems, Post Market Verification (PMV) of In vitro Diagnostic kits and Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation (SLMTA).
His 30 years of work experience in the provision of laboratory services spans the private and public sector organizations like West Africa Milk Company (WAMCO), COCIN Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Mangu, Plateau State Hospital Management Board and ERCC Medical Services, Alushi, Nasarawa State.
Within IHVN, he has handled roles such as Quality Manager, PLASVIREC, Benue State Laboratory Lead, Senior Technical Adviser, National External Quality Assessment Laboratory (NEQAL), Zaria, and Regional Senior Program Officer.
He obtained a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Degree from Ambrose Ali University in Ekpoma, Edo State and a Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Genomics from Nasarawa State University, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Mr. Tok has participated in various trainings on Laboratory Quality Management Systems, Good Laboratory Practice, Laboratory Audit, Biosafety/Biosecurity, Equipment Installation and Maintenance, EQA amongst others.
He is passionate about community service and support for the needy, especially widows. Mr. Tok enjoys listening to music, football, singing, farming and loves children. He is married with children.
